Armed with a .45 caliber Thompson submachinegun, a US paratrooper belonging to the 101st Airborne, also known as "The
Screaming Eagles", fights his way somewhere in France. The 101st proved to be one of the best and most agile unit in
the US armed forces. On June 6, 1944 six thousand
paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division swooped down over occupied France. Their mission, to clear and secure exits from
Utah Beach for the arrival of the 4th Infantry Division. Problems began immediately and by the time the paratroops touched
down, 1,500 had been killed or captured. Most of their supplies had been either dropped into swamps or dropped into enemy
hands. The remaining were able to rally together fought their way to their objectives.
After successfully completing their mission, they then set to capture the town
of Carentan. They fought a bloody and bitter fight for five days, dislodging the German 6th Parachute Regiment defending the
town. After three days of continous fighting, the 101st Airborne
Division was relieved and returned to England where they trained for their next mission, operation Market Garden in Holland.
