This is a member of the elite Britsh Special Air Service (SAS). He belongs to Bravo Two Zero, one of the 3 road watch patrols
sent out in the Iraqi desert during the Gulf War.
His unit consisted of 8 men sent out to observe Iraqi supply route, Scud missiles and communication
centers. They were inserted during night only to realize by daytime they were only 300 meters away from an Iraqi outpost.
His unit
was subsequently discovered by Iraqi civilians. They were able to fled into the desert after killing a number of enemy soldiers.
Somehow, three of them got separated from the other five. The five SAS men fought their way out by hijacking a vehicle. Two
of them were killed and the rest captured.
Of the other three SAS members, one died of hypothermia, and one was captured. Only
one managed to escape to the Syrian border but only after walking some 290 kilometers in seven nights and and eight days.
This brave SAS trooper
held off the pursuing Iraqis for 30 minutes before he was killed, allowing his comrades to escape, albeit, temporarily. He
was awarded a posthumous Military Medal.
